The NFC is a semi-budgetary forestry agency established by the Slovak Ministry of Agriculture on 1 January 2006. The Centre reports directly to the Department of Forestry and Wood-processing of MARD SR. The NFC was founded on 1 January 2006 as a merger of three formerly independent public forestry agencies - Forest Research Institute Zvolen, Lesoprojekt Zvolen and Institute for Further Training and Education of Forestry Professionals.
National Forest Centre comprises four specialised institutes:
- NFC - Forest Research Institute Zvolen (NFC-FRI Zvolen)
- NFC - Institute for Forest Consulting and Education (NFC-IFCE Zvolen)
- NFC - Institute for Forest Resources and Information (NFC-IFRI Zvolen)
- NFC - Forest Management Planning Institute (NFC-FPI Zvolen)
